Special Purpose Machines 

Machines built for one job, when no catalogue machine does it. Designed, machined, automated and installed by the same team, in Mohali.

A special purpose machine, an SPM, is one built for a single job rather than sold from a catalogue. Most start the same way: a stage of a production line that still runs by hand, a product shaped wrongly for standard equipment, or a rate that existing machines cannot reach.

We have been building machines in Mohali since 1960, and the 19 proven designs behind our packing, wrapping and making machines are the starting point rather than a blank sheet. That matters more than it sounds: a mechanism that has run in a factory for thirty years is a safer basis for a new machine than one drawn from scratch last month.

Pharmaceutical and packaging machinery

Pharma is the area buyers approach us about most often, and it is one we already build for. The ACM-XFH 1050handles capsule manufacturing and the BOSS systemdoes secondary packaging for tablet, caplet and capsule strips. A custom build for a pharma line therefore starts from machines that already live in one: cleanability, material selection, batch traceability and the documentation an audit expects are all familiar constraints rather than new ones.

The same applies to tobacco,soap and detergent andgeneral industrial lines, where the machines we make as standard sit either side of whatever gets built to order.

One team, design through to service

The part most machine buyers underestimate is how many suppliers a custom build normally involves. Here it is five stages and one of us.

Design

SolidWorks 3D models and AutoCAD manufacturing drawings, produced in house. Where the part already exists and the drawings do not, we reverse-engineer from the worn sample.

Prototype

A printed prototype you can hold and fit to the machine before anything is cut in metal. Catching an interference here costs an afternoon; catching it after machining costs the part.

Manufacture

Machined in our own shop in Mohali. Critical components are not outsourced, which is what keeps the tolerance and the timeline under our control rather than a vendor’s.

Automate

PLC control with HMI, variable speed drives, sensing and rejection. The same control architecture that runs our packing and making machines.

Install and support

On-site commissioning, operator training, and production optimisation until the machine holds its target rate. Then repair and annual maintenance.

Design consulting is part of the first stage rather than a separate product. Most buyers arrive knowing the problem and not the machine, so the work starts by studying the line, the material, the rate and the integration points, and proposing an approach before anyone commits to a build.

Questions buyers ask

What counts as a special purpose machine?

Any machine built for one job that no catalogue machine does. A product with an unusual shape, a non-standard packaging material, a speed no existing model reaches, or a stage of your line that currently runs by hand. If you can describe the job, it can usually be built.

Do you build special purpose machines for pharmaceutical production?

Yes, and it is the area we are asked about most. We already build the ACM-XFH 1050 for capsule manufacturing and the BOSS system for secondary packaging of tablet, caplet and capsule strips, so the constraints of a pharma line are familiar: cleanability, material selection, batch traceability and the documentation an audit expects.

Can you do the machining as well as the design?

Both, in the same building. Machining is done in our own shop in Mohali rather than outsourced, which is the difference between quoting a tolerance and holding one. That also means a design change late in the build does not restart a vendor queue.

We have a part but no drawings. Can you still make it?

Yes. Send the worn part. We measure it, model it, print a prototype to check the fit, then machine the production part in metal. This is how most spare parts for older machines get made, because the original drawings are usually long gone.

How does a special purpose machine project start?

With a conversation about the job, not a specification. Most buyers know the problem and not the machine, which is the normal starting point. We study the production line, the materials, the speed you need and where the machine has to integrate, then propose an approach before anyone commits to a build.

Do you take on contract manufacturing or one-off builds?

Yes. One machine, a small batch of parts, or a sub-assembly for somebody else’s build. The shop is set up for low volume and high mix, because that is what a machine builder does every day.
